Preparing for Your Newborn Photoshoot

Often times when booking a shoot parents don’t know what to expect (and that’s perfectly okay!). Your top priority is making sure that you hire a skilled photographer that fits your style. It’s my job to make sure that you have the knowledge to prepare for your shoot. While we set the exact date of your shoot after baby is born, I always recommend booking your photographer a few months in advance.

There are three types of newborn shoots that I offer: Fresh 48, Lifestyle Newborn, and Posed Newborn. Below, I’m going to share a little bit of what each session looks like and some tips on preparing for each one.

Fresh 48

Fresh 48 sessions happen at baby’s birthplace within 48 hours of birth. You will text or call me when your baby is born to set up a time for me to come by. Some things that you can gather beforehand for the photos are swaddles, blankets, sentimental items, newborn outfit, headbands, hats, outfit for mom (and dad, grandma, grandpa, siblings, etc). Keep in mind that I have a plethora of swaddles, headbands, etc, which I’m happy to provide! Just let me know your color preferences and I will bring some!

Lifestyle Newborn

Lifestyle newborn shoots take place in your home during baby’s first few weeks. When your baby is born you will text or call me and we will set up a date. Just like Fresh 48, make sure to gather swaddles, blankets, etc or let me know that you would like me to bring some. For clothing, I like to recommend neutral/pastels that are casual and comfy! Keep it simple. Beige, gray, navy, soft blue, light green, etc work well. For baby, we can always swap outfits or swaddles!

Remember, your home does not have to be perfect! It’s your home and it’s supposed to look lived in. Just tidy up a bit. Make sure things are in the room where they belong and just toss the rest in a closet until I leave. When I come in I will open your blinds/curtains and do a quick walk of your house to find the best lighting. Most of the shots will be taken in the nursery, living room, or master bedroom. It is helpful if your bed is made up, as that often makes for some cozy family shots, but that’s still totally up to you! And finally, turn the temperature up a few degrees for baby’s comfort.

Posed Newborn

Setting up a posed newborn session is just like the other shoots. When baby is born you will text or call and we’ll set up a date. Ideally, posed sessions take place within baby’s first 12 days. I will supply everything needed for your shoot, such as posing bean bag, buckets, blankets, and other props. Of course, you are welcome to provide any items that you’d like included.

On the day of your shoot I suggest that turn the temperature in your home up at least 5 degrees. It is helpful if you keep baby awake for at least 1 hour before their session. When I arrive, baby should receive a full feeding and diaper change while I set up. This will help baby be able to fall into a deep, comfortable sleep. As with the lifestyle shoot, I will survey your home for the best lighting and set up there. I may move some furniture, but I will put everything back before I leave.

Lastly, don’t stress! This is your family and memories! Let’s document what’s real and special. I’m here to answer any questions you have or just chat.
